hair and makeup design you did for all characters in Guardians of the Galaxy is highly-acclaimed. Comparatively speaking, do you find the hair and makeup design for The Mummy 2017 more challenging?

您为2014年面世的电影《银河护卫队》的各大角色所做的妆容和发型已经为您赢得了不可忽视的优秀成绩,那么您觉得此次在《The Mummy 2017》中您所面对的角色造型和妆容是否更具挑战性?

There were some looks from The Mummy that were equally if not more complicated. We wanted to respect the period wewere working with and pay homage to the 1932 version while engaging in a younger audience and bringing them into this experience.

The Mummy has various stages of looks in life and death; each of them take a while to create through this evolution process. There was also the point that we were making this more of a horror/thriller than the past iterations.

Once we defined the visions of what she would look like both alive and dead, we were able to hone in on the specifics. It originally started as a five and a half hour makeup look! When you first see her transform, you see the cuts on her hand, the change in her blood and skin colour. It is very intricate.

一旦定义好女主角在活着和死亡状态下大致的样貌之后,就可以细细去打磨推敲细节。一开始的时候这个造型要花5个半小时时间!你看到她变身的过程时,可以清晰看到手上的伤痕,血液和皮肤的颜色变化,这些细节我们都做得很精致复杂。

With practice, we eventually cut the timing down to three and half hours. Keep in mind there could be multiple artists working on one actor at a time. Other than the actual creation, there was a lot of pre and post work to consider each day.

熟能生巧,后来我们只需要3个半小时就能完成整个妆面了。不过别忘了通常是几个化妆师同时围着一个演员开工的。除了完成妆面本身,前期和后期每天还要花掉大量的时间。

After shooting for the day it was imperative that especially The Mummy’s skin was taken care of. We made a conscious effort to clean off and moisturize using natural and coconut oils that worked well on the skin as it was the most important part in making sure the look was unified day after day.

一整天的拍摄之后,照顾好“木乃伊”的皮肤尤其重要。我们特意使用椰子油来卸妆,效果很好。为了保证皮肤在“连续作战”的情况下保持良好的状态,清洁这一点至关重要。

Mummy franchises are very popular blockbusters. Considering the storyline and character persona in this new movie, were your hair and makeup design somewhat different from the previous three movies?

《The Mummy》系列电影都是脍炙人口的商业大片,和系列前三部的角色相比,结合本部的剧情和角色定位,您为他们所做的设计会有什么不同呢?

Yes, definitely. The looks were very different, mainly because this movie is viewed more as a horror/thriller. The other obvious difference is that we were working with a female Mummy whereas the previous have always been male.

造型完全不同,主要是因为这部电影更靠近恐怖片/惊悚片的风格定位。另外一个明显的特点就是我们的主角是女木乃伊,之前主角都是男性。

Our film went back to the basics with special effects and big looks with major transitions. They were all very well-researched and concentrated on the early 1900’s with a modern twist. We paid respect to Ancient Egypt with very beautiful and stylized looks throughout the film.

我们电影在特效方面和造型过渡之间算是返璞归真了。造型之前大量收集了1900年早期的资料,造型的重点也集中在这个时期的风格,当然也调剂了一些当代的审美取向。整部电影中美感出众、造型别致的设计便是我们对古埃及文化致以的敬意。

Cruise looks very handsome and even younger-looking in the trailer. Do you think your hair and makeup design helped?

He is a very handsome man, but I’m happy to take credit for his good looks if you want me to!

e did you get the inspiration for Sofia Boutella’s daily-look-to-Mummy-look transition?

对于女主角Sofia Boutella的日常生活妆容和剧中女木乃伊的妆容之间的转变的灵感源自哪里?

I spent a lot time doing research on Ancient Egypt. I held onto the visualization of the Egyptians, the princesses and pharaohs. For example, we used the shapes that evolved during this time period in the headdresses.

我花了很长时间收集古埃及的资料,仔细看埃及公主、法老的造型。后来也使用了这期间用在头饰上的一些形状。

Inspiration-wise, while researching and coming up with initial looks, I always had in the back of my mind what she was going to look like as The Mummy. We wanted to see the way the skin would change while keeping her beautiful and relatable. The makeup along the way needed to be incorporated into the storyline.

灵感方面呢,我们在收集资料和构建最初造型灵感的时候,我的脑海里其实一直有个大致的木乃伊形象。我们希望在保持她皮肤自然美感的同时,清晰地看到皮肤发生变化的过程。化妆必须和故事本身无缝衔接。

I mixed many products in order to achieve the different levels of what we wanted to portray, but M∙A∙C Prep + Prime Fix + was always on hand. Especially in the heat, we were constantly spraying this as it sets the makeup while refreshing the overall look. We started with very basic ink colours like M∙A∙C Chromaline and M∙A∙C Penultimate Eye Liner and gradually mixed with Eye Shadows and Chromacakes to develop the ideal shades.

我混合了很多种产品才得到我们想要的效果。但是魅可保湿喷雾是不可或缺的产品。温度很高的状况下,我们就一直喷这个产品定妆,它同时还有让妆面保持整洁干净的功能。我们一开始选择了魅可的传统深色,比如Chromaline和Penultimate眼线,后来和眼影以及Chromacakes混合,才得到理想的色彩。

I think it will. I don’t think people are expecting for it to be so intricate and out there. We took this opportunity to introducethis film franchise to a younger audience. We’re giving the horror/mummy movies a strong start and have made it quite trendsetting. KeepingAncient Egypt at the forefront, we looked a lot to artists, street style, young girls fashion and beauty trends and the way people approach different situations around us as part of the motivation.

我觉得一定会。我觉得人们心里的预期可能没想到造型会这么前卫和复杂。
